Moderate earthquake in Vrancea, Romania

M 4.8 moderate earthquake shakes Vrancea county of Romania, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located just 5 km NW of Marasheshty, Romania. It was 24 miles deep.

National Institute for Earth Physics has however kept the earthquake with magnitude 4.5 at 40 km depth.

The Vrancea seismic zone, including counties of Vrancea and Buzau, as well as surrounding mountains, is one of the most active seismic areas in Europe, Xinhua has written in its online edition.

Magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Vrancea in 1940 had claimed lives of 1,000 people and injured 4,000 others, mostly in Moldova. The 1940 Vrancea earthquake was the strongest earthquake recorded in the 20th century in Romania.
