A red alert has been issued after the heavy downpour left 22 people dead and made more than 32,000 homeless in Nicaragua.
The Municipal Committees for Disaster Prevention (COMUPRED) in Prinzapolka and Waspam, in the Caribbean North has declared a red alert, Today Nicaragua reported.
Nine of the victims died when a retaining wall collapsed around 10:30 p.m. Thursday in Barrio 18 de Mayo, in southeast Managua. Another seven people were rescued alive.
Around 4,544 homes home are damaged or destroyed by floods or have been evacuated due to flood risk.
