Jayapura landslide kills 11, two missing

Landslide in Jayapura, Indonesia has claimed lives of at least 11 people and left two others missing, Xinhua reported quoting national disaster mitigation agency.

Three rivers burst their banks and caused flash flooding in the area. Flooding and landslides have left 15 houses badly damaged and 40 houses lightly damaged.

Heavy rainfall caused landslides in several parts of Jayapura. Floodwater swept away houses when the Anafri River burst its banks in Kloofkamp.

State-owned electricity company PT PLN has been asked to suspend the electricity supply in the city to avoid accidents.

Rescue teams have been evacuating residents in the flooded areas, Jakarta Post reported quoting the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Landslides and flooding in Sulwesi, Indonesia had claimed lives of at least 16 people in January 2014.
