Colombia landslide news: 6 killed, 26 missing

Injured people are having treatment at hospitals in Garzón and Suaza (Huila). Following rescue officials, death toll from the landslide could rise up to 28 (Photo aside by RadioSanteFe).

Landslide in Colombia has claimed lives of at least six people, injured 10 and left 26 others missing, the Red Cross National Rescue office told local medias.

Landslide has buried two buses, an ambulance and a tanker truck around 6 a.m. local time on a highway in southwest Colombia.

Landslide which occurred on a highway linking the town of Suaza, Huila state to Florencia in Caqueta department has washed away some 25,000 cubic meters of dirt and rubble.

Civil defense members, highway Police and national army with firefighters are engaged in rescue operations.

Landslide is the most common natural disaster in Colombia which accounts for almost half of all geological hazards in Colombia.

Landslides news report prepared by the Colombian Bureau for Disaster Relief for the period 19990 to 2004 has concluded an estimated 97 landslide events with 59 deaths each year in Colombia.
