M 5.1 moderate earthquake shakes Nevada-California state line today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 27 km S from Tonopah Junction between Reno and Las Vegas. It was 7.7 miles deep.


Following USGS Pager Map, weak shaking of MMI II will have felt by the people of Hawthorne, Bishop, Mammoth Lakes, Yerington, Tonopah, West Bishop, Big Pine, Fallon, Modesto, Sonora, Pioneer, Rancho Cordova, Sloughhouse and as far as Sacramento.


Multiple aftershocks have been recorded in Nevada-California state line. At least eight aftershocks less than 4.0 have been recorded by USGS till 03:30 UTC,
February 13, 2013.

According to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory, the earthquake in Nevada today took place within the Walker Lane Belt of western Nevada in a tectonic region termed the Mina Deflection. This area is area characterized by NE to EW striking left-lateral strike slip faults. Earlier in 2004, two moderate earthquake of magnitude 5+ occurred about 30 miles west of today's event.

Nevada is the third most active state for earthquakes in the United States.
Earlier reports has shown that there are at least two active faults in the Reno area that may be capable of producing an earthquake of magnitude 7 or higher.

Yesterday's North Korean Nuclear test was also recorded on the Nevada Seismic Network. In fact events of such size (M 5.1 as recorded by USGS) is enough to be seen at seismograph stations throughout the world.

 
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from this earthquake in Nevada-California.

  1. It will be now common and there will be more quakes as the incoming meteor nears to the earth.
