  • Flooding in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
    -One killed by the floods of the Capivari river in Xerem, in Duque de Caxias near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
    -Rio de Janeiro floods have displaced more than 3,000 peoples.
    -Nearly 215 mm of rain fell in just 24 hours north of Rio.
    -Flood-triggered mudslides have killed hundreds Brazilians in recent years.
    -January 2011 Rio de Janeiro floods and mudslides killed 903 people and caused damage of 2.0 billion Reais.     Update
    -Death toll from Rio floods has risen to two. At least two people, including a nine-year-old child, are still reported to be missing.
    -Heavy rains have also affected towns of Angra dos Reis, Paraty and Mangaratiba.

  • Wildfire in Tasmania, Australia
    -A fire is burning in Woorak Rd, Epping Forest in Tasmania currently.
    -All roads leading to Tasman Peninsula are currently closed.
    -Hundreds of firefighters are struggling to control the blaze.
    - 2009 Victoria wildfire killed 173 people.
    Update 02:00 UTC; January 5, 2013
    -Around 1000 people have been rescued by boat from the bushfire-ravaged Tasman Peninsula.
    -Firefighters are currently dealing with fires at Forcett, The Tasman Highway and Lake Repulse.
    -About 30% of the buildings in Dunalley have been destroyed by fire including the police station, bakery and the school.
    Update
    -One person is reported to be killed in the blaze.
    -Following Tasmania fire officials, up to 65 buildings have been damaged by a wildfire near the small town of Dunalley, east of the Tasmanian capital Hobart.
    -An emergency warning has been issued for a large bushfire near Bicheno, 180km northeast of Hobart.

  • M 4.6 moderate shallow earthquake in Falcon, Venezuela (@ 21 km depth) with epicenter located 11 km WSW of Santa Cruz de Bucaral. It will have welll felt by the people of Valencia, Barquisimeto, Coro and Yaritagua region of Venezuela.

  • M 4.6 moderate shallow earthquake in Sicily, Italy (@ 9 km depth) with epicenter located just 5 km N of Maniace. Light to weak shaking will have felt by the people of Randazzo, Cesarò, Bronte, Sant'Agata di Militello and Catania.

    -One older houses is reported to be collapsed. However no injury reported.
    -Tremor was enough to send Sicilian people to the street. 
  • M 4.8 moderate earthquake in Taiwan (@ 30 km depth) with epicenter located 68 km E of Hualian. People of Su'ao, Yilan and Buli will have felt weak shaking of MMI II-III.

  • M 3.7 light shallow earthquake in Oklahoma (@ 11 km depth) with epicenter located just 7 km SW of Boley. Light shaking of MMI IV will have felt by the people of Boley, Prague and Okemah. Recent Flash Floods
Ongoing Major River Floods (Based on Satellite observation): Afghanistan (Amu Darya), Australia (Darling), Bolivia (Madre de Dios), Brazil (Tocantins), Chad (N Djamena), China (Mekong and Huang He), Democratic Republic of the Congo (Ubangi), Dominican Republic, Honduras, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq (Shatt al Arab and Tigris), Kenya (Tana), Philippines, Sudan (Blue Nile, White Nile), Syria (Euphrates), Tanzania.
  • Flooding in Palawan, Philippines
    -Around 130 families evacuated in Bataraza and Quezon towns of Philippines duie to flooding.
    -The floods in Quezon and Bataraza reached up to three feet.
    -Tropical Storm caused rainfall and flooding over the region. Auring made landfall over the southern tip of Palawan early today (Friday).
    -Southern Palawan was placed under Storm Signal No. 2 while the rest of Palawan was placed under Storm Signal No. 1.
    -Yesterday, at least 90 families were evacuated due to flooding in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte.
  • Flooding in Narathiwat, Thailand
    -Heavy rainfall has again flooded Sungai Golok, Waeng and Tak Bai region of Narathiwat province.
    -Thailand's meteorological centre for southern east coast in Songkhla Province has warned to remain ashore over the next 1-2 days due to high waves offshores, at up to 2-3 metres.
    -Earlier New Year's Eve' Flooding in Thailand destroyed a bridge leading to Moo 10 village in tambon Khao Jiak.

Recent Tropical Cyclones
  • Tropical Storm Sonamu
    -As of 10:00 UTC, TS Sonamu was located 510 nm east-southeast of Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam.
    -Tropical storm Sonamu struck the Philippines at about 00:00 GMT on 4 January.
  • Tropical Cyclone Dumile
    -As of 10:00 UTC, TC Dumile was located 260 nm south-southwest of La Reunion.


Natural Disaster News
  • Thunderstorm in Tarime, Tanzania
    -A student of Nyabichengule secondary school was killed in a thunderstorm in Tarime district of Tanzania.
    -One other injured person is having treatment at Tarime district hospital.
    -Following Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA), the ongoing season rains will continue to come down until march 2013.

  • Mudslide in  Subang Jaya, Malaysia
    -Seven vehicles were buried under a mudslide at Persiaran Putra Bahagia, Subang Jaya, Malaysia.
    -Mudslide damaged five cars, a van and a motorcycle. Luckily no one was injured.
    -Construction at the Kingsley Hill housing project at Putra Heights is currently halted due to mudslide.
