Recent Natural Disasters
- Floods in Eastern Cape, South Africa
-Eastern Cape flood toll has risen to eight. A five-year-old boy body was found in East London. Even now heavy rain continues to lash the Eastern Cape.
-Flooding in Wit River in Port Elizabeth also killed one people. Three days ago, three people died in Witteklip, Kleinskool and Coffee Bay.
-About 1000 people were evacuated from Nelson Mandela Bay. A dam burst its walls and flooded the area. Around 70 people were rescued off the Swartskop river in Port Elizabeth.
-Several roads in the Eastern Cape were badly damaged in the floods. The only road linking the Forest Downs area to Port Alfred also washed away.
-Heavy storm damaged several houses in Nquthu area, in the northern part of Kwa-Zulu Natal.
-Following South Africa weather Service, heavy rainfall will continue in Guateng, the Eastern and Western Cape until tonight.
-Officials had already warned (warning issued on October 19) that parts of 3rd Avenue, Seaview and Lakefarm roads in Port Elizabeth may be affected (Photo: Massive hole created in the section of Grahamstown towards Port Elizabeth in Eastern Cape, South Africa; by Stephanie Lloyd).

-Severe storm in the coast of northeastern Spain killed three people.
-Huge wave created by storm killed people in beach area in Lloret de Mar and Roses (Girona).
-Storm caused heavy rainfall and ultimately the river Riguel in Zaragoza to overflow.
-Flood also affected area was Cinco Villas district (Sabada) where 110 students were evacuated from the Reyes Catolicos high school.

- M 5.5 moderate earthquake Offshore El Salvador (@ 66 km depth) with epicenter located 58 km S of Intipuca. Light shaking of MMI IV will have felt by the people of Intipuca, Chirilagua, Jucuaran, Conchagua, La Union and El Transito. People of Soyapango, San Salvador, Tegucigalpa, Managua and Santa Ana will have felt weak shaking of MMI III.
20:28 UTC (local time Sunday, October 21, 2012 at 02:28 PM @ epicenter) - M 4.5 moderate earthquake near the Coast of Oman (@ 33 km depth) with epicenter located 26 km SW of Al Fujayrah, United Arab Emirates. It will have well felt by the people of Shinas, Adh Dhayd and Khawr Fakkan (United Arab Emirates). Weak shaking will have felt as far as Sharjah and Dubai .
16:13 UTC (local time Sunday, October 21, 2012 at 08:13 PM @ epicenter) - M 4.3 light shallow earthquake in Dominican Republic Region (@ 18 km depth) with epicenter located just 6 km NE of Arroyo Salado. Light to weak shaking will have felt by the people of Nagua, Sanchez, San Francisco de Macoris, Cabrera, Montellano, Puerto Plata and Santo Domingo.
15:07 UTC (local time Sunday, October 21, 2012 at 11:07:30 AM @ epicenter) - M 4.7 moderate shallow earthquake in Bio-Bio, Chile (@ 17 km depth) with epicenter located 18 km SSW of Curanilahue. Light to weak shaking will have felt by the people of Lebu, Canete and Arauco.
11:40 UTC (local time Sunday, October 21, 2012 at 08:40 AM @ epicenter) - M 5.3 strong earthquake in Central California (@ 9 km depth)
with epicenter located 20 km SW from New Idria. Moderate shaking of MMI V
will have felt by the people of King City and Greenfield. People of
Soledad, Coalinga, Gonzales and Lake Nacimiento will have felt light
shaking of MMI IV. Similarly weak shaking of MMI III will have felt by

06:55 UTC (local time Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 11:55 PM @ epicenter) - M 5.6 very strong earthquake in Iceland (@ 10 km depth) with
epicenter located 21 km NNE of Siglufjordur. Strong shaking of MMI VI
will have felt by the people of Dalvik and Siglufjordur. People of
Husavik, Saudarkrokur and Akureyri will have felt light shaking of MMI
IV.

Natural disasters are such devastating phenomena. In a minute, they leave cities and countries totally ruined. I hope we could develop better detection and mitigation mechanisms to cope up with the natural disasters.
