Heavy rain causes flooding and landslide in Mumbai, India

Heavy rainfall caused flooding and landslide in Mumbai and adjoining Thane. Parts of Marathwada region, including Beed, Osmanabad and Latur also received heavy rains. About 10,000 people are reported to be affected by severe weather in parts of Mumbai. So far one and four other reported to be injured due to severe weather condition across Mumbai.
A house collapsed in In Mira-Bhayander. However, no injury reported.
All flights were delayed by 15-20 minutes at the Mumbai airport yesterday. Heavy rainfall also flooded rail tracks in Kurla, Mazgaon, Vidyavihar and Sion.
Landslide disaster occured in the Chembur area. Mumbai traffic police issued an alert asking people to avoid unnecessary travel. The municipal corporation had to press 110 water pumps into service to drain out excess water from the streets.
People living on the banks of rivers Surya, Vaitarna and Daherja in Palghar taluka are alert to move to safer place as more heavy rainfall is forecast to hit Mumbai today.
Maharastra flood in 2005 was worst where over 900 mm of rainfall in a single day, the highest ever rainfall on a single day in over a century. At least 5,000 were killed at that time all because people were not alert about the severe disaster as radio stations and many television stations did not receive any weather warnings or alerts by the civic agencies.
