Update August 13
-Health minister of Iran Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi announced that 306 killed and 3,037 injured from two earthquakes.
-Of the 306 deaths, 219 are women and children and 49 are men. Hospital performed some 700 surgeries.



Update August 12
-Death toll rises to 250 with more than 2,000 reported to be injured.

-Death toll has risen to 183 with more than 1500 people injured.
-Almost 16,000 people are given emergency shelter.
-Ay least 45 killed in the city of Ahar and 500 of the injured.
-More than 20 moderate aftershocks recorded.

-60 villages sustained 50-70% damage, 6 villages 100% destroyed in Northwestern Iran.
-Earthquake caused more than 800 billion rials damage to rural places. The earthquake in the villages Gvyjhbl, Lylan, Bzqvsh, Kurram Valley, ball Drq have suffered the greatest losses.

-Following Iranian state television, at least 87 people have been killed in a 6.4-magnitude earthquake in northwestern Iran.
-Emergency crews, ambulances, medicines from three neighboring provinces have been sent to the quake area.

 Death toll from earthquakes in Iran rises to at least 80. This death toll is reported via local media in Iran. Official report yet to come.

A spokesman for Tabriz's fire department told the ISNA news agency that "most parts of Tabriz have no electricity and there is a heavy traffic jam in the city."

"Sixty villages have been heavily damaged and are in need of help," Abbas Fallah, a lawmaker in the hard-hit town of Ahar, told local reporters.

Death toll has risen to 50. More than 400 people reported to be injured. Aftershocks greater than 4.5 are still recorded in Northwestern Iran.

-Phone lines to many villages reported to be cut off.

-Disruption of mobile communications reported in Tabriz. Earthquake epicenter is 60 km ENE of Tabriz. In 1780, a devastating earthquake near the city killed over 200,000 which is regarded as 25th most deadly disaster of all times.
-Helicopters and rescuers are on their way to the affected villages.
-Major damage is expected in Ahar, Varzaqan, Mehraban and Heris which are within 60 km radius.

M 6.4 and 6.3 two severe earthquakes jolt Northwestern Iran today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter  was located 60 km ENE of Tabriz. Both the quakes were at very shallow depth of around 6 miles.
Tremors were felt even in Armenia (Yerevan) and Georgia (Tbilisi).

Tabriz is the fifth largest city and one of the historical capitals of Iran and the capital of East Azerbaijan Province.
Iran is straddled by several major fault lines and has suffered several devastating earthquakes in recent times. The deadliest was a 6.6-magnitude quake which struck the southern city of Bam in December 2003, killing 31,000 people - about a quarter of the population.
