M 7.6 powerful earthquake shakes Philippines Islands late Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 96 km E of Sulangan. It was 21.7 miles deep.
The quake was felt off the east coast of Samar province in the central Philippines.
A tsunami alert originally was issued for several countries including Japan and for Pacific islands as far away as the Northern Marianas, but most of them were soon lifted, leaving warnings only for the Philippines, Indonesia and Palau, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
Following USGS PAGER MAP, strong shaking of MMI V will have felt by the people of Sulangan, Guiuan, Santa Monica, Salcedo and San Benito. Moderate to light shaking will have felt by the people of Pilar, Libertad, Mandaue City, Cebu City, Cagayan de Oro and Mantampay.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The August 31, 2012 M 7.6 earthquake off the east coast of the Philippines occurred as a result of reverse faulting within the oceanic lithosphere of the Philippines Sea plate. The preliminary location of the earthquake indicates this is an intraplate event, 50 or more kilometers to the east of the subduction zone plate boundary between the Phillippine Sea and Sunda plates. At the latitude of the earthquake, the Philippine Sea plate moves west-northwest at a velocity of approximately 100 mm/yr.
