M 3.7 light earthquake shakes part of Netherlands today, the EMSC reported.

According to EMSC, the quake was centered in Eenrum, about 16 km NW Groningen. It was 15.1 km deep.

It is expected that the earthquake might be due to gas extraction in this area. In September 2011, magnitude 4.5 earthquake hit 40 km southeast of Nijmegen close to Xanten, Germany.

Earthquakes are rare in Netherlands because the Netherlands is not at the edge of a tectonic plate. However a quake with a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale on April 13, 1992 in Roermond caused considerable damage.
One of the common question is Can there be big earthquake in Netherlands?  Well it can be explained in this way: As the Eurasian plate boundary is relatively close to the Netherlands, so an earthquake is possible. But if we consider the direction of the moving plate, it is unlikely to be a very large quake.
Following seismologists, there can be very big quakes from 2020 in Europe.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
