M 5.8 strong earthquake shakes parts of India, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan today.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake was centered in Tajikistan-Afghanistan border about 40 km S of Jurm, Afghanistan. It was 118 miles deep.
Following USGS PAGER MAP, weak shaking of MMI III will have felt by the people of Jarm, Ashkasham, Faizabad, Ishkashim, Dorufchah, Farkhar, Taloqan, Khorugh, Khanabad, Kulob and Charikar.
Pakistan: Tremors were felt in Islamabad, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sargodah, Dera Ismail Khan, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Mardan, North Waziristan, Swat, Hangu, Battagram, Nowshera an Hazara division.
India: It was well felt in North India also in Kashmir valley, including Srinagar. Uttar Pradesh (mainly Noida) and Haryana (mainly Gurgaon). People of Chandigarh felt it too.
Afghanistan: Tremors were even felt in Afghanistan's capital Kabul.
Deep earthquakes (200km) have frequently occurred (as today earthquake) in this region, these are thought to be due to the subduction of the eastwards dipping, India plate, though whether subduction is currently active is debated.
Earthquake Analysis
This earthquake is deep and the populated area is also far from the epicenter So NO MAJOR DAMAGE EXPECTED. However the tremors will have felt in a vast area (Common with deep quakes). Aftershocks common.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
