Recent Natural Disasters

• Flash floods in West Sumatra of Indonesia
  -Eight people killed in Flash floods in West Sumatra of Indonesia. More than 250 people left their home.
  -A state of flood emergency declared by the Padang Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD).
  -Floods caused widesprad damage across Sumatra with worst hit areas as Limau Manis, Batu Busuk, Kampung Koto, Cengkeh, Padang Besi, Kalumbuk and Tunggul Hitam.
  -Heavy rains caused the river in Padang city to overflow. Floods destroyed over 90 houses, 11 mosques, five bridges and one health clinic.
  -Indonesia suffers hugely from natural disasters every year.
• Wildfire in southwestern Oklahoma
  -Wildfire has burned more than 10,000 acres in southwestern Oklahoma.
  -More than 200 firefighters are struggling to control the blaez which is burning near Cooperton in Kiowa County. Cooperton is located 115 miles southwest of Oklahoma City.

• M 5.8 very strong but harmless sea quake in Mauritius - Reunion Region (@ 10 km depth) with epicenter located 389 km NE from Rodrigues Island. Just a weak shaking of MMI II-III will have felt in coastal region.

  Update
  USGS has revised the magnitude to 6.7 with epicenter located 387 km NE of Port Mathurin, Mauritius. However the populated area is 1000+ km far where jst a weak shaking will have felt.
• M 5.3 moderate deep earthquake in Tajikistan (@ 116 km depth) with epicenter located 11 km N of Murghob. Just a weak shaking of MMI II-III will have felt by the people of Khorugh, Kashi, China and Osh, Kyrgyzstan.

Volcanic Activity List

• Japan/Sakurajima recent volcanic activity
  -Volcanic ashes spewed by Sakurajima volcano of Southern Japan.
  -Ashes were scattered to nearby Kagoshima City. The volcano warning is at level three out of a possible five levels.
  -Sakurajima volcano has erupted more than 600 times this year.

Flooding List

• Flooding in Beijing, China
  -Death toll from Beijing floods has risen to 77.
  -This is heaviest rainstorm in Beijing in six decades.
  
• Flooding in Valenzuela, Philippines
  -Several schools in Valenzuela City remained suspended today (Thursday) due to recent flash floods.
  -New low pressure area (LPA) is expected to bring heavy rainfall in southwest Philippines.
  -Flooding is among the most common natural disasters in Philippines.

Tropical Cyclone List

• Tropical cyclone in Philippines
  -New low pressure area (LPA) is expected to strengthen to a tropical cyclone by Friday afternoon.
  -LPA (Gener) was estimated at 430 km east of Hinatuan City in Surigao. Another LPA estimated at 220 km northeast of Basco in Batanes.
  -Flash floods and landslides warning issued for Visayas and Mindanao area.

Natural Disaster News

• Lightning in Toronto, Canada
  -Lightning destroyed at least five houses on Spadina Road in Brampton. The fire caused $1 million in damages.
  -No injury reported but 18 people became homeless.
  
• Greenland Ice sheet surface melt
  -Recent satellite image by NASA shows ice sheets melted from 40% to 97% in just four days.
  -This disaster is believed to be caused by an unusually strong ridge of warm air, or a heat dome, over Greenland from recent days.
