It was even felt in Concepción, Quilpué, Valparaíso and Viña del Mar city.

M 5.8 very strong shallow earthquake shakes Maule, Chile today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 68 km E Linares and 282 km S of Santiago. It was 4.3 miles deep. The epicenter was located below the High Andes on the border between Chile and Argentina.

According to USGS Pager Map, Light shaking of MMI IV will have felt by the people of Linares, San Clemente, Longavi, Parral, San Javier, Talca, Curico and Chillan. Weak shaking will have felt by the people of Constitucion, Rengo and Los Angeles.

M 9.5, 1960 Valdivia earthquake or Great Chilean Earthquake of Sunday, 22 May 1960 is to date the most powerful earthquake ever recorded on Earth which killed 5700 people.

The South American arc extends over 7,000 km, from the Chilean margin triple junction offshore of southern Chile to its intersection with the Panama fracture zone, offshore of the southern coast of Panama in Central America.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
