M 2.8 minor earthquake shakes Okinawa, Japan today (2:53 JST), the Japan Meteorological Agency reported.
According JMA, the quake's epicenter was Okinawa-honto Kinkai at 20 km depth.Just a slight tremor will have felt in Okinawa.
It is the same area where Typhoon Ambo (international code name Mawar) [Tropical Storm Ambo/Mawar Update] is expected to affect this Monday.
Okinawa Prefecture is one of Japan's southern prefectures. It consists of hundreds of the Ryukyu Islands in a chain over 1,000 kilometres long, which extends southwest from Kyūshū to Taiwan.
In February 2010 an earthquake, measuring 7.0 on the Richter Scale, hit the island.z
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
Felt Reports
Shannon Daniels from Chibana Okinawa-shi: I didn't feel the quake that was reported earlier...perhaps I felt the "aftershock" though? It was probably around 1030-11 pm I didn't think to look at the time and I had put my feet on the coffee table and all of a sudden the table was shaking, not very hard but enough to notice if you were touching it. My husband said he felt nothing.
