From June 19-20 2012, Duluth experienced the worst flood in its history.
Similar flood damage occurred to streets and sewers in many of the same places of Duluth in 1972.

From June 19-20 2012 / Duluth, MN
*Nine inches of rain throughout the course of thirty hours.
*Mayor Don Ness declared a State of Emergency. Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton also declared a State of Flood Emergency sending the National Guard and the Red Cross to assist in the relief efforts.
*Several sink holes popped up throughout the city.
*The Lake Superior Zoo flooded. Many zoo animals killed.
*Flood damages estimated at $100 Million

Duluth Historic Floods of 1972
August 20th, 1972 / Duluth, MN
*Three inches of rain fell in just a two hour period (Time: 3:00 am to 4:30 am; Date: August 20th, 1972)
*President Richard Nixon declared the area a Federal Disaster in Duluth, Minnesotta.
*Damages total $18 million.
September 20th, 1972 / Duluth, MN
*10 hours of continuous rainfall caused flooding in the LIttle Falls, MN area.
*Flood damages were estimated at $20 million.

In 1972, three major storms sent millions of gallons of water pouring down Duluth’s hillsides, washing out roads, yards and homes.
