Recent Natural Disasters

• Extreme Drought in North Korea
  -This May is the driest month in 50 years in western coastal areas. Just 2mm rainfall on the capital Pyongyang in the past 30 days.
  -The western region of Korea is particularly badly affected by lack of rain. . Drinking water shortage has been reported.
  -Rice and corn planting is badly affected leading to shortage of food in several parts.
  -After the North’s latest rocket launch this April, the US has also suspended a plan to deliver 240,000 tonnes of food. due to this food shortage, more than 2mn children are expected to go hungry in North Korea.
  -Prime Minister Choe Yong-Rim has visited the area of the disaster.

• M 4.1 moderate shallow aftershocks in Northern Italy (@ 2 km depth) with epicenter located 6 km NE San felice sul panaro. light shaking will have felt as far as Modena. Earlier M  5.9 Bologna-Verona Italy Earthquake killed 7 people some days ago.

• Senate acts to extend flood insurance program 60 days
  WASHINGTON — The Senate on Thursday voted to extend the life of the National Flood Insurance Program for 60 days, giving lawmakers time to work on a long-term extension that would seek to restore fiscal solvency to the debt-ridden plan.

• Tropical Storm Beryl
  -Beryl is currently (03:06 UTC) located 345 km se of Charleston South Carolina and 435 km E of Jacksonville Florida.
  -A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Volusia/Brevard County line Florida to Edisto Beach South Carolina.

• Tropical Storm Sanvu
  -Tropical storm 03w (Sanvu) is located approximately 245 nm east of chichi jima, Japan.

•  Adverse weather in Lukla, Nepal
  -Over 900 tourists stranded in Lukla due to adverse weather condition
  -Private helicopters rescued around 250 tourists from Lukla on Saturday.
  -Zero visibility reported at the airport.
• Natural disasters: Comprehensive survey to be conducted in nine districts
  LAHORE: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) will conduct a detailed study of settlements located within 10 kilometers of major rivers in nine districts.
• Over 600m allocated to remove consequences of natural disasters
  The Azerbaijani leadership allocates additional funds to remove consequences of natural disasters in Azerbaijan. Thus, in order to eliminate the consequences which occurred in 2012 in northern part of Azerbaijan as a result of a series of devastating earthquakes, floods in 2010 in the Kur and Araz rivers and other natural disasters.
