UPDATE

0430 hours 16 December 2011(Local time)

Civil Defence evacuated a number of houses above Nelson’s Rocks Road overnight as the land became unstable following days of torrential rain.

Reports of a house beginning to shift came into the Emergency Operations Centre just before midnight and an evacuation operation was immediately put in place to contact a dozen householders to leave immediately.

Residents were phoned or door knocked by Police and told their properties were at risk and to report to an Evacuation Centre at the nearby Nelson Suburban Club on Annesbrook Drive.

The evacuees were then registered. All of them went on to stay with friends and family.

The affected Rocks Road properties were inspected overnight by engineers and stickered according to their risk. They will be reassessed at daylight.

Rocks Road which is also State Highway 6, was closed early yesterday because of slips.

Overnight and this morning,  engineers will continue inspecting all evacuated homes in Nelson city using a sticker system to indicate whether the property is safe to return to.

More building inspectors and Geotech and Civil Defence welfare staff are due to arrive from Wellington today.

Civil Defence is trucking food into Collingwood using an alternative 4 wheel drive route this morning. The town’s supplies ran low yesterday when a slip at Bird Hill cut the main route into town. It’s expected to take some days to repair.

Following low cloud yesterday a reconnaissance helicopter flight was cancelled but it’s hoped the Nelson Tasman Rescue helicopter can make the trip at first light to assess damage.

There was further rain overnight but river levels are continuing to drop. Land throughout the region is heavily saturated and the risk of slips is still an issue.
 Information for residents

Power has been restored to some customers in the Tahuna Hills area.

But there areas still without power

Network Tasman is working to restore supply.
 Telephone outages:

Up to 300 telephone lines are still out in the Britannia Heights area. Contractors hope to restore these lines today.
In addition up to 205 landlines are still out in the Tahunanui area due to a landslip. Restoration is not expected until 22 December.
Richmond, Nelson and Takaka Evacuation Centres

An evacuation centre in Richmond will reopen at 8am today and the centre at the Nelson Suburban Club reopened at midnight last night.

An Evacuation Centre in Commercial Street Takaka will reopen at 6.30am today.
Public Health information – flood water contamination

All floodwater should be treated as at high risk of contamination with raw sewage. This means no swimming, fishing and shell fish collection from coastal margins until further notice.  Swimming in and even cycling through contaminated water is discouraged.
Motorists urged to stay off roads

Motorists are still urged to stay off roads where possible and only travel if absolutely necessary. Bow waves from vehicles are damaging properties.
