Recent World Disasters 
  • Brutal Cold wave in Europe
    -At least 89 people died (highest: 43 in Ukraine and 15 in Poland)
    -More than 720 other Ukrainians were hospitalized due to hypothermia and frostbite caused due to cold wave
    -Many of the dead were among the homeless.
    -Cold (subzero cold) deaths were also reported in Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria
    -The cold wave is predicted to continue this week (aside European cold video)
  • Flooding in Mitchell city, Australia
    -A disaster situation has been declared for the town of Mitchell, situated on the Maranoa River between Charleville and Roma, in western Queensland
    -More heavy rain expected across parts of inland Queensland today
    -Maranoa River will peak on Thursday afternoon but will start falling again overnight
    -100mm of rainfall predicted in the Mitchell area over the next 24 hours

  • M 7.1 very strong shallow Sea quake in Vanuatu (@ 23 km depth) with epicenter loated 124 km W of PORT-VILA, Efate, Vanuatu. about 46,000 people will have felt strong shaking of MMI VI. People of Norsup will have strong shaking and people of Luganville, Port-Vila, Port-Olry, Isangel will have moderate shaking. NO DAMAGE EXPECTED AND NO TSUNAMI THREAT

  • M 4.5 moderate deep earthquake in Antofagasta, Chile (@ 109 km depth) with  epicenter located 150 km ESE of Iquique, Tarapaca, Chile. It will have faintly felt

  • M 4.9 moderate earthquake in Sumba Region, Indonesia (@ 52 km depth) with epicenter located 41 km SE of Waingapu, Sumba, Indonesia. Light shaking of MMI IV will have felt above the epicenter.

  • M 3.0 weak very shallow (@ 5 km depth) earthquake in Central California with epicenter located just 27 km WSW from Cartago, CA. It will have well felt by the people of Olancha, Coso Junction, Cartago and Lone Pine, California

    M 5.5 strong Sea quake with MMI VI in New Britain Region, Papua New Guinea (Akiuli @ 29 km depth) with epicenter located 52 km SE from Kandrian, New Britain, PNG.
  • M 5.0 moderate earthquake near the Coast of Southern Peru (@ 70 km depth) with epicenter located 177 km SSE of Puquio, Peru. Light to weak shaking will have felt in Arequipa, Moquegua and as far as Lima, Peru

  • M 4.6 moderate shallow (@ 38 km depth) earthquake in Liaoning, China with epicenter located just 25 km SSE of Yingkou, Liaoning, China. Yingkou is the nearest populated area with population 591,159! Light shaking will have felt in Dashiqiao and Yingkou city of Liaoning region

Recent Volcanic Activity

  • Smithsonian/USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report (New Activity/Unrest)
    • Chuginadak Island/Cleveland Recent Volcanic Activity: AVO reported that on 31 January the Volcano Alert Level for Cleveland was raised to Watch and the Aviation Color Code was raised to Orange due to the formation of a new 40-m-wide lava dome in the summit crater that was observed in satellite imagery on 30 January.No current seismic information was available because Cleveland does not have a real-time seismic network.
    • Halmahera/Gamalama Recent Volcanic Activity: CVGHM lowered the Alert Level for Gamalama from 3 to 2 (on a scale of 1-4) on 24 January based on visual observations of white plumes rising as high as 100 m above the crater and a decrease in seismicity since the last eruption on 23 December 2011.
    • Indonesia/Krakatau Recent Volcanic Activity: CVGHM lowered the Alert Level for Anak Krakatau from 3 to 2 (on a scale of 1-4) on 26 January. No details or reasons for the change were given in the report.
    • Lomblen Island/Lewotolo Recent Volcanic Activity: On 25 January CVGHM lowered the Alert Level for Lewotolo from 3 to 2 (on a scale of 1-4) based on decreased seismicity and visual observations during 5-15 January. During 5-15 January fumarolic plumes rose 200-500 m above the summit and incandescence was observed.
    •  Democratic Republic of Congo/ Nyamuragira Recent Volcanic Activity: The VolcanoDiscovery Team observed the fissure eruption at Nyamuragira that began on 6 November 2011 during 22-25 January 2012 from the newly formed cinder cones located about 10 km E of the summit crater. They reported three coalescent cones with the largest cone containing a small lava lake.
    • Lesser Sunda Islands/Paluweh Recent Volcanic Activity: Seismic activity from Paluweh (also known as Rokatenda) increased during 12-18 January, prompting CVGHM to raise the Alert Level from 1 to 2 (on a scale of 1-4) on 19 January. Fog prevented visual observations of the volcano.  


Recent Flood Update

  • A disaster situation has been declared for the town of Mitchell, situated on the Maranoa River between Charleville and Roma, in western Queensland due to heavy flooding. Maximum chance of localised flash flooding today.

Recent Cyclones

  • Tropical cyclone 09S (Iggy) is active in the south Indian Ocean located approximately 410 NM west-northwest of Perth, Australia. GREEN ALERT

Other Disasters

  • Blizzard warning (prediction) is in effect today for the Bristol Bay region, the eastern Aleutians and Alaska Peninsula, the eastern and northern portion of the Kenai Peninsula, Thompson Pass near Valdez, Turnagain Arm and the Upper Hillside of Anchorage, and the Kackemak Bay region.
  • Grass fire in the area of N.W. 10th Street and Rockwell Avenue is now under control. It now doesn't cause threat to people of Oklahoma
  • Powerful thunder storm is predicted today in Oklahoma and Texas. Heavy Snowfall is also predicted in the central plains
  • Heavy snowstorm with extreme weather is predicted today and tomorrow in Prefectures of Aomori, Yamagata and Niigata area of Japan. Special warning of high waves of up to 8 meters through Thursday in the sea off northern Japan and the Hokuriku region on the Sea of Japan side of central Japan.
